So much is happening! It makes sense that our brains have to filter out ninety nine percent of the things our senses could be picking up on, because if they didn’t it would be a lot harder to live out the parabolic dramas we so love, these arcs of time and cycles of life that only exist when we distinguish past and future from present. They say time is what keeps everything from happening all at once, but lately it seems that time isn’t really working so well, with glitches and crossed connections all over the place. Maybe time as a construct really is breaking down. I know I stopped believing in a while ago, and lately, everything seems to be happening all at once.

As far as the small portion that I’ve been taking in of all these phenomenal happenings, it’s been packed with adventure as always. I recently returned from a lovely trip to Kentucky, where I spent time with both sets of grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins and so on. It was too short, but a good visit nonetheless. I just posted some pictures for it, which I also plan to put on Facebook.

Back out in the hills, I’ve been finding renewed energy for the many projects we have opened up and on the table here. There was a spell before I left when it got really hot and both mine and Jerry’s energy sort of leveled off. Days spent in the house and in front of this machine were getting to me, but a brief period away did wonders for my own perspective, and the weather has softened up a bit now. We’ve been quite active working around the property, as well as on other things at the house. I’ve been working on making maps of the land, as well as putting together our records for this project. We’re somewhere between official and casual, organized and sloppy, diligent and indolent. But man, would we have some impressive material to show people if we put all these records and reports and pictures and such together nicely. I guess the day for that might come, but for now I’m just trying to keep track of it all, and Jerry and I are both trying to develop the habit of doing brief write ups of anything significant we work on.

So that’s been keeping me busy, and just as I get really into the swing of juggling the gardens, the house, the desk work, the house work and so forth, I find the calendar has brought around another date of departure. The farthest north Dave Matthews Band will be touring on the West Coast this summer is Northern California, so thence I shall go. I actually bought the tickets thinking Laurie and Phillip would be up here and we’d all go, but with their dates moved back a week or so, I’m flying solo. I’ve got two extra tickets that I never got around to selling because Craigslist wants me to jump through ten flaming hoops to post an ad these days. I guess I kept assuming that someone I know would want to go to the concert, but as limited as my social reality is these days, that’s a bit naive. Perhaps I’ll be able to sell them outside the amphitheater.

But anyhow, I’m not driving all that way and then coming straight back, so I’ll probably head over towards the coast and camp somewhere. I’ve a mind to explore the Redwoods. I’ve been living in Oregon for over a year now, and I’ve done so little camping, hiking, exploring, and so on. Man, there’s so much to see out here, and I’m itching to get all around get to know this land better. Patience, young warrior, the inner sage reminds me. Tend your gardens and be nowhere but where you are. The mountains and rivers and canyons aren’t going anywhere.

So yeah, on top of all that’s been happening, a bunch more lies ahead for us. We’ve got lots of visitors coming out, including my sister and Phillip, Jerry’s family, and some friends of ours with whom we’re brainstorming some Anastasia events in the Northwest. We’re also going to a barter fair in September, and from now until the fall we’ll be harvesting food in large amounts, canning and preserving as much of it as possible. I made my first batch of pickles recently, and I can’t wait to eat them. Our tomatoes are going to come in in droves, and I’m planning on making some pasta sauces, salsa, and perhaps even ketchup. And of course, I’m already struggling to keep up with the zucchini. I bake it and fry it and steam it and grate it, and I put it in just about every meal, and still it produces. This is a wonderful gift, and a very magical thing. To think that people go hungry when things like zucchini exist….

I’ve got a very nice page under construction for our project here at the food forest, and I hope to have that up soon. I’m working on pictures and the site today, and with any luck, there will be something new up before I leave for the concert this weekend. I wish everybody well!

I awoke before dawn and slipped into the garage to grab the telescope. Jupiter was shining bright, and I had specifically taken the telescope out of the car garage (which gets closed at night) and put into the other garage, which we call the porch. It’s our smoking deck and general discussion area. Many a good conversations have we had on the chessboard table there, where the cats sleep at night and pace meowingly as soon as we head out there in the morning.

The morning was cold in the predawn, even for July. My dad always used to say it was chilly for June no matter what month it was (it was never June back in SA) just as an expression, a joke. But here, tis no joke. Twas chilly for July this morning, dad. I wore only the poncho and knelt awkwardly beneath the telescope, which I had to point almost directly up to aim it at mighty Jove, only halfway finished parading across our sky so triupmhantly, but about to outshone by the sun. For some time I fiddled with the positioning, looking through the lens, getting down to line up the scope by line of sight, and then twisting the knobs. Nothing but black. And then dark blue. And then light blue. Jupiter can still be seen for a while after the sky is light, but not too long, and finding it with the telescope becomes increasingly unlikely as its glow diminishes, relatively.

Next time, Jupiter, I said with a solemn shake of my fist.

Reflecting on yesterday, I find myself truly humbled and grateful for my lot in life. I live on the back steps of civilization, hanging out with people who have already gotten over the whole trip and are looking to play a new game. The natural beauty of this area is breathtaking, and I roam about at will, well equipped and increasingly connected to like-minded people who know the area well. Just about all of my childhood and teenage fantasies have been manifested here. Not that I ever had any trouble keeping my childhood alive in my imagination and thoughts, but I was always having to keep that to my private life and get into character whenever I went into grown up world, with the cars and the planes and the bombs and the oil drilling and the computers and laws and paperwork and endless prohibitions and guilt trips. Now, however, my public life and work, so to speak have blended nicely, and I’m free to just play and live without anyone telling me I’m supposed to be doing something different.

So yeah! Can I get Texas Matt to give me a “Whooo!”? I send my love to everybody, and I write to throw down some random updates and speak of the river. I spent some time in a very beautiful, clean river yesterday, and it was a stirring experience.

But first! I’ve been putting a bit of energy into the novels lately, preparing for the Wolf Creek Fair. I’ve mentioned this briefly, I think, but it’s getting closer, and I’m trying to organize my thoughts on what the heck I’m actually going to do, sitting in a booth for three days straight. I’m listed on the official site for the Wolf Creek Inn as Author, Adventurer, Gardener, Musician. I’m going to bring the guitar, of course, and will probably kill lots of time with that. Hopefully I’ll sell some books. But I also hope to bring a bunch of books, some of the more significant ones to me that I have in my possession. I’m hoping to get into lots of conversations with people about issues pertinent to our planet and watershed. The art and the novels and the music are all an important part of the emerging culture, I think, but this is an age of crisis, and diligence to that which really sustains life must precede any artistic expression or celebration of life. So networking! It’s huge.

I’m happy to include in my bookshelf of influence the box set collections of two of the most brilliant artists of our time. The complete Far Side and the Complete Calvin and Hobbes, by Gary Larson and Bill Watterson. I recently bought the Far Side collection to match my Calvin one, and man have I been having a blast going through those tomes of hilarity. For those of you who don’t already know, I am, and have been for the entirety of my literate life, extremely familiar with the Far Side cartoons, and over years of reading all the paperback books time and again, I got to where I knew just about every cartoon Larson ever drew. I owned almost all of the books Larson put out for a while, and I read every book he put out, so I figured I’d seen them all. But man was I wrong. Going through each cartoon as they were submitted to the papers, from 1980 to 1995, I’m finding that about 40% of what I’m seeing I’ve never seen before. That’s HUGE to a man who thought he knew the Far Side in side and out side of the box that both Larson and I live on the far side of. Of course, now that I’ve got these books, it won’t be long before I really do know them all. Won’t that be a jewel on my crown? Ha!

So on to the River! Yesterday we went out to celebration on the Northern Umpqua, put on by a watershed organization. It was a party, pretty much, with food and a band (which our friend David played in) and booths, but it was also a gathering of conscious individuals taking real steps to protect the watershed and forests. We are under assault out here, unarmed citizens without huge financial empires to back us, standing against the advancing machines of profiteers who see our sacred mother, this Earth, as commodity to be cashed in. But we are not afraid, for we know who we are, and we believe in the powers of our children, and of all who have love in their hearts. (Seriously, you gotta read the Message from the Children article!)

I enjoyed swimming in the cold clean waters the Umpqua, though my teeth got to chattering when I stayed in too long. I’d bask in the warmth of the rocks whenever that happened, and then move along, taking great care not fall on the extremely slippery rocks. The river was shallow mostly, except for a channel in the center which was quite deep and moving very fast. Rafters, kayakers, and tubers came floating by all day, and families and dogs were splashing and playing the river all along the shore of the park where we met. It was a magical place, serene and secluded. No camera, sorry to say. It’s broken down, currently. Oh well.

We met some interesting people, some of whom were actually locals to that area. I enjoyed talking with them, and I got all fired up when I heard that there are lots of caves in the area, even one that’s behind a waterfall. Talk about my kind of adventure! I got some numbers and am planning on going back out that way to go exploring some. I’ve done so little exploring around Oregon since I’ve moved, which I lament at one level, while I’m also okay with it too…I’ve got old growth right in my backyard, and lots of young gardens and food forests to tend to. These are not the old days when I would be gone in a heartbeat with a backpack and week’s worth of food. Still, I’ll not be able to resist taking breaks and going for adventures. It’s all I can do to not fill up the entire year with places to visit and explore…

I really appreciated the level of dedication many of the people I encountered yesterday have to honoring and protecting the river, and I’m pleased to be living amongst conscious and politically active people. Such people would never make it in DC, but who cares? Local is all that matters. Politics are only a negative thing when they reach a certain level. Otherwise they’re just a natural part of human culture, a system of decision making and collective efforts to manage resources. So good work, Pacific Coast Watershed!

Summertime Musings

Greetings my friends! Life carries on in Oregon, with hot afternoons but cool nights and clear skies. I’ve taken to sleeping on the trampoline rather than in my hammock, primarily for the excellent view it affords me of the stars as I lie and wait for sleep. Spectacular!

Only my heart awakes to sounds of sorrow, even after slumber so sweet under skies so brilliant. The birds are silenced by the dreadful sounds of diesel engines and metal grinding against tree flesh. The loggers have moved in on the hillside one drainage ravine away from our property, and the sounds of the massacre have been filling the valley for the last few days. Jerry and I have gone over there to check it out a couple of times, and just this morning I went to have a look at what they were up to, dropping in on the site from above. Whole swaths of forest have been leveled, with a dozer coming in crushing all but the biggest trees and a big machine on tracks coming behind it to cut them down. It takes only two guys to do this, although there are probably more on site. But they’ve cleared at least an acre or two in the last few days. The efficiency of it is chilling.

But life goes on, and I have faith that we can work out a better system for managing our resources, particularly our forests and our water. Once we accept that our old systems are not working, designing new ones that work better will be much easier. That’s what it’s all about, at this stage. Designing new systems.

So let’s see, what’s new? My sister and Phillip are going to have another baby. Callie will have a little brother or sister close in age, which I think is healthy. Challenging for a couple years, I’m sure, but it pays off in the long run. They’re coming up here to visit in September, which will be great fun. But I’ll see them even before that in Kentucky. My dad arranged for us all to fly out so we could spend some time together with other family out there. It’s always good to visit KY.

Also, I’ll be going down to California to see Dave Matthews Band in August, and I’m very much looking forward to that. I bought the tickets thinking Laurie and Phil would be here around then, but they’re not coming until later now, so I’ve got to find a couple of other people who are interested in seeing Dave. I expect I’ll be able to.

Elsewhere in the world, unfortunately, there are some serious problems. The oil leak in the gulf is turning into quite a catastrophe, it would seem, and the war hawks are screeching, their sights set on Iran and China. I send thoughts of a peaceful life on a family domain, surrounded by family, friends, gardens, and forests, to those who plan and wage wars. Please, let us not spend our valuable resources on more killing. Let’s not forget that it is we the people who fight the wars, not the profiteers who set them up. It is we who manufacture their weapons, drive their trucks, fly their planes, run their offices, shuffle their information, and ultimately create their version of reality. But what a world of difference it makes just to start from the point of view that we can create our own versions of reality. Everyone who wants to play the king of the hill game, where we bomb the enemies of our God straight to hell and control the world through deadly force, raise your hands! Everyone who wants to the play sustainable local community game where we take care of our own needs and celebrate life through art and culture, raise your hands!

So stand up!

I’ve been enjoying some wonderful new music. Andrew Bird’s album Noble Beast isn’t exactly new anymore, but I’ve just discovered it recently, and have been getting very into it. What a genius he is, perspicaciously poetic, blending a diverse pallet of musical styles underneath his semi-sardonic and ever so witty lyrics. Also among my new acquisitions is Natalie Merchant’s latest album, Leave Your Sleep. My respect for Natalie Merchant has skyrocketed now that I’ve taken the time to listen to her songs and get a feel for what she’s singing about. Leave Your Sleep, though is a collection of poems that she put to music, a project that took her five years. It’s something of a masterpiece, I’ll contend, and I tip my hat to one of the more delightful musicians of our era.

I had quite a bit more that I was going to include in this post, but this has taken me way too long to write, and I’m tired now. So at that, I shall retire.

For many years, I’ve thought that it would be cool to spend some time in a studio and record some music. Several of my friends have have studio programs and record quite a bit of music, but I’ve never invested the time or money into it. I’m not, nor will I ever be, a professional musician, but I’ve written some songs and I always figured I’d record them at some point.

I knew I was getting close to that point when I met Richard. Richard was in my permaculture class, along with his partner Bonnie. I didn’t get to know them extremely well during the class, but I got to talk with Richard at the party we had after our graduation, and I learned he was a musician and that he was working to start up a publishing and music production company called the Valley of Sound. The purpose of this company would be to help writers and musicians to get their work out a bit, and to spread the message of sustainable living and cultural transition. I could see right off, and I guess he could too, that there was lots of overlap between our visions, and we talked then about maybe getting together to play and record some music sometime.

This was in March, and it stayed simmering on the back burner until just recently when I heard about the Wolf Creek Artists and Author’s Fair, which will take place at the end of July. It too seemed to be quite a fit for my style, so I called about it and signed up to participate. I’ll tell more about the fair as I get better prepared for it, but in essence, I’ll have a booth where I can sell books or just about anything else I’ve created, and I figured it would be fun to have a CD to hand out.

So I got in touch with Richard and planned a visit down to where he lives, near Mt. Shasta in California. He and Bonnie live on about five acres on a hillside that faces the mountain, which is an impressive view. It will be even more impressive once the highway shuts down, but I digress. I was excited to check out their place as I was to record music, because Bonnie and Richard are both perfect examples of the kinds of people I like to network with and learn from. They’ve done some really incredible things on that land, which is in a rain shadow, with more or less desert conditions. But deserts don’t scare permaculturists, and they had all sorts of things growing.

Bonnie told me that they struggle with alkaline soils, which seemed to be an understatement. It looked to me like what they were struggling with was less soil than it was rock. Richard had cut a trail up into the property, and you could see when walking that he had only been able to scrape down about half an inch before hitting a solid formation of clay that was packed into sheets so tightly that it was like rock. And yet they were growing corn, beans, squash, flowers, salad greens, grapes, and a whole lot of other stuff. There were a even a few nut trees. Bonnie said she didn’t do anything to the soil, she just planted in it. They were building soil as much as they could on site, and with the wild alfalfa that grew everywhere, they had at least one major source of carbon matter to mulch with.

But anyway, I’ll describe the details of their place and all the permaculture principles in practice there, but for now I’ll return to the recording session.

I stayed three nights, and we had two full days of recording, plus a half day on the last day. Richard and I spent maybe sixteen hours total in the studio, working on a very leisurely schedule. We spent lots of time just jamming and practicing some songs down at the house, and we walked around the property quite a bit too, brainstorming for the recordings and talking permaculture. We’d record a bit, do some other things, and then go back up to record more. Richard’s studio is in a small little structure that he built himself from a kit, up the hill a ways from the house. It was designed to be a shed, but he modified it nicely, and it was a very comfortable place.

He used a eight track sound board to record everything, starting first with acoustic rhythm tracks, then adding vocals and other guitar parts. The long range plan is to put in a full ensemble of instrumentation on some of the songs, but we started simple. I had about twelve songs that I figured were worth recording, but I narrowed it down to work on at this first session. We only did three of those, and only the basics of the song. It takes a long time to get good recordings, and I’m not nearly as good of a musician (as far as getting the parts exactly right) as it feels like I am when I play and sing for leisure. Microphones magnify errors, it seems, and knowing that the pressure’s on to get it right makes it easy to falter.

So anyway, we figured we’ll take our time and start with the basics. The songs we ended up recording sound pretty good, though they’re rather unpolished yet. I will see if there’s some way I can put them up on this site at some point.

Richard and I played pretty well together, I think. He’s more practiced and skilled with guitar than I am, and I’m glad to have his help getting things like bass lines, lead parts, and percussion. We didn’t get into these much on this visit, but there will be others. But even more important than these music projects, I think, is the community that forms around music, and the ways we all stand to benefit from the cooperation and communication necessary to play with other musicians, the challenge of learning songs to performance level standards, and the joys of celebrating life and creation through music.

Summer Solstice Party

So only a couple of days after our big food forest event, we had a bunch more people out for a party to celebrate Litha, the summer solstice. A lot of the same people actually, but this time we had Josh and Jennifer and their whole crew. In the last post I believe I mentioned Sue and Leighila, her granddaughter. Leighla has three younger sister’s, and their ages range from fifteen to about two and half or so. Josh and Jennifer (who is Sue’s daughter) have their hands full. Another young couple we know, Matt and Kali came up with their daughter Ruby, so there were lots of kids running around the yard while we sat out in the driveway and enjoyed a nice warm afternoon. Josh got brought a badmitton set and we had lots of fun with that, as well as playing on the hammoc, swing and trampoline.

I’ve really been enjoying getting to know some local people around here, and I sense alliances forming. Josh is the right kind of guy to be getting to know, as widely knowledgeable as he is about so many things that are becoming ever more pertinent. He grows quite a bit of food, raises chickens and has a few bulls. Had, I should say. He just butchered one recently, after the solstice party, actually.

About a week before the party, Jerry and I took a tour of his place, enjoying seeing the gardens, the forge (he’s a blacksmith) and the different projects he was working on around the property. He lives on land adjacent to his parent’s place, the land he grew up on. He left home to get an education, but returned to set up his home and family. I really admire the amount of energy he puts into being self reliant, filling needs with his own efforts and ingenuity and raising much of what is needed to live on his own land, and I know there’s lots I’ll be able to learn from him about survival in a post industrial world. Josh has the kind of knowledge and experience that made it possible for people to survive the depression, or to settle wild land in earlier days. And his family is loads of fun. Loads of drama, but loads of fun. There were a few tussles amongst the kids (mostly between the older two) during the evening, but the ill feelings evaporated rather quickly as the games and play shifted from one thing to another.

It was a nice mellow evening. There was lots of food, lots of smoke, and lots of drink, though I was surprised to see the alcohol mostly untouched the next day. Only half a dozen beers were drunk all night. Of course, not all of us were partaking, and nobody was drinking like I used to drink. Our friend Brad came out, which was cool, because he’s another local guy on whom Jerry and I have depended a lot to learn about people and places around the valley. Bill, of course, was also there, and Sue’s husband Charlie was also with her, and it was fun getting to know him some more.

There was one very funny moment when he took a picture of the youngest girl in Josh’s family, Kirsten. She apparently didn’t like her picture being taken, and vocalized this. Charlie just made a teasing, O-mouthed face of surprise, and said, “I’ve got your soul now!”

“NO!” Kirsten said, not really understanding, I don’t think, what he was even up to, but knowing he was teasing her a bit.

“I’ve got it in the box now, and there’s nothing you can do!”

“NO!!!!” She wailed, storming off. She was now mad, and she did a little attitude walk that she probably learned from one of her older sisters. It was quite funny.

As the night got dark we went up to the fire pit, which was all loaded up with wood and ready. Smores were roasted, stories were told, and I had the guitar, so a few songs were sung. It was a good time all around, and we decided we’d have to get together some more in the future.

So this party was a while back, and I’ve sort of rushed writing about it because I’m so behind. We’re actually going out to a party at Sue’s tomorrow, which is good. We’re building up the kind of network I like to see, with the solid foundation of time spent together just chilling, eating, watching the kids play, and going for little adventures.

We’ve been on quite a few since I moved up here, but I haven’t been writing about them. I’ll try to do a post after this one about some of the fun stuff I’ve been into, but I’ve also got another post to put up about my trip to California to record some music. So little by little…

This site is probably going to be changing again soon, as it’s taking on a new theme of sorts. More on that later. I hope summer fun abounds for everyone! Peace!

Food Forest II

Today was a big day out at Gateway Gardens, which we also call the Gateway Food Forest. We doubled the significance of that latter term today by putting in Food Forest II, or FF2. The hillside below the house, once overrun with wild weeds tall enough to tickle your chin, has become a splendid garden, young and barely sticking out of the ground in some places, but already hard at work at transforming clay, air and water into food. Alchemy never boasted such spectacular magic. Numerous garlic plants, which was already muscling its way in amongst the knapweed and spear grass, are now surrounded by burdock, comfrey, berry bushes, young fruit trees, and perennial garden greens. The entire area is now mulched with hay, even some cardboard to really shade out patches where the grass wasn’t dug out.

Jerry and I had already expanded the fenced in area around FF1, cleared a bunch of the ground vegetation, and dropping off several loads of grass cuttings from around the property. We’d also been importing hay, both from our neighbors across the street, and from our friend Brad who had a good hay hook-up. We thought we’d gotten a bit too much, but today we burned through our whole stash and didn’t even really get the ground as covered as it ought to be. Charlotte, a permaculture designer from Eugene who orchestrated our work party today, thinks we need about eighteen inches of mulch over everything. But we got things pretty well set up today.

Several friends from town showed up to participate and hang out, including the Bill, Larry, Sherri, Sue, Leighila, and a couple who has been helping Sherri at the Mountain Grove Gardens. Charlotte also brought a crew, one of whom was Robin, who had been there for the first food forest work party. Gavin was also with them, and he was fun to get to know. He was telling us about his latest adventures climbing up into trees in old growth groves to protect them from the loggers. Gavin and Robin both worked hard, and we were glad to have them. We were also glad to have Dolly up from Ashland. Dolly and I took our permaculture certification course together, and we also worked together on the Shambhala Project. I’m glad she’s finally gotten the chance to see Jerry’s place and all that we’re working on out here.

We had a wonderful day, with great weather. While we yearn for full days of full sun (it’s been such a gray spring!) it was nice to have some clouds to keep things from getting too hot, and the sun did shine through for a good while in the afternoon. We had a snack station set up to accommodate frequent breaks, and we took lots of time to sit and talk. Larry brought a drum and sang some songs with it. Leighila, who turns out is quite the singer, also sang some songs for us. The plants do love music. Who doesn’t?

After we’d gotten everything in, we admired our grand creation, a small piece of the planet that will bloom with abundance and ripen into a beautiful edible forest. It was quite an accomplishment for one day, and we retired to the house to get off our feet and enjoy some scrumptious burritos. After dinner, I took Dolly, Robin and Gavin on a Pug ride around the property, showing them the ponds and the Glade. We also took a walk through the old growth, marveling at those majestic quincentennial creatures stretching up towards the heavens, their needles swaying in the evening breeze. What a gift to have such a forest nearby.

So now that the food forest is in, what happens? Well, for one, we’ve got to water it a whole bunch, which will be time consuming until we get some more irrigation set up. We’re thinking about using a sprinkler on FF2, as there are so many plants that drip lines and soaker hoses will have a hard time reaching them all. We planted a patch of potato sprouts, about eighty strong, I’d guess, along the edge of the FF1, which will also need regular water. I very much enjoy watering by hand, but with as many different plants as we’re putting in over so much ground, there’s got to be some automation. Eventually, I expect we’ll have creeks meandering through the food forest, but until then, irrigation can be handy.

But with most of the food in the ground, we’re now free to think about natural building, forestry work, local networking, and a few other projects. We got everything in just in time for the summer solstice, which we’re going to celebrate out here on Sunday. Today was a work party, but this will be a plain old party, which should be fun.

A New Season

Dear Friends

I’ve decided to check back in with this old site, which I’ve left pretty static for a while. My last updates were several months ago, right when I got started with my Permaculture design course. I was excited enough about that class to want to start writing on the blog again, but two entries into it I fizzled. My apologies for this. Last year was an extraordinary year for me, which I attempted to document on this site as it was happening, but failed to keep up. But things have turned all the way around, and I’m in the position now of having a fresh start for this new season. (Now that I’m gardening, I measure the year from spring to spring, following the growing season.)

Before I get into what I’m working at now, I suppose I ought to give everybody a quick run down of what all has happened over the course of the last year. This site left off with me working with Shambhala Shasta, an Anastasia eco-community. The plot of that story is dense, full of exciting drama that would make for one hell of an adventure tale, perfect for this site, but I’m not going to share the details of my time with Shambhala at this time, as quite a few people would be unhappy with me if I did.

Suffice it to say that I’m no longer working on that project anymore, having found a new place to apply my energies, still in Southern Oregon, which I’m really growing to love. I will tell about the many things that we have going up here in Glendale, but first I’ll give an overview of what’s been going on since I was last active in posting, at the end of last summer.

As the drama of Shambhala heated up, it became clear to me that I wasn’t going to remain where I was for much longer, though I had no where else to go. Neither did Laura, who had also given all her money to Shambhala to pay for her domain, moving from Chicago with a toddler and another baby on the way. She and I got to know each other over the course of the year, living in a community house together and seeing each other every day. I eventually became her main source of help with her kids, and it was only natural for a romantic relationship to develop between us. We had both been drawn to the same vision, and we both wanted the same life. Having given all we had (she way more than I) to get out to Oregon and get onto the Motherland, we didn’t really have a whole lot of options when things started to fall apart. We could not move onto the Shambhala land, which was not sufficiently developed. We had been living at the Shambhala community house, but we could no longer live there, nor did we really want to.

We each took long trips home towards the end of the summer, and when Laura got back from Chicago in September, we went and picked up a fifth wheel RV that her sister paid for so she would have somewhere to live. We parked it in an RV park in South Ashland, living off of food stamps and the little money that I had saved. I became the father figure of Eva and Gaia, who were just about to turn 4 and 1. It was quite an experience, both challenging and rewarding, and we all had a good time that fall, even though our situation was uncertain and we had very little money.

I was confident, however, that the right opportunity would show up, and that a nice place to live would come with it. One did, and we jumped right on it. We ended up being caretakers for a small ranch about thirty minutes away from Ashland. It was a good deal, in which we paid no rent and had no bills. I had minimal duties around the property for the winter, so we spent lots of time just playing, hiking around the woods behind the house and doing art projects.

We also got to know Jerry and Bill better over this time, and we soon started driving up to Glendale to hang out on Jerry’s land. Bill was the man to whom I owe the privilege of being hip to what’s happening on this planet, and what there is to do about it. I think I mentioned him in my New Human Culture section, along with his book Final Empire, which is available online. He and Jerry are friends, and ever since last fall, Jerry and I have been discussing some projects on his land that we might collaborate on, and eventually we decided to build a natural home dug into the ground up the hill. Jerry invited us to move to his land so we could get started on it, as well as several gardens. This was a better arrangement, even than living at the ranch, even though it would mean camping out until we got the house built. It would be summer, we figured, and we could get the tipi from the Shambhala land.

So we did quite a bit of driving back and forth between Gold Hill and Glendale in the srping, and we started moving things up there as plans became more solid. We settled our arrangement with the Gold Hill house by April, and we moved the last of our stuff up to Jerry’s place just in time to be here for the first big project with his land – putting in a food forest. Some people from Eugene came down to help, and we had lots of local help too, from Jerry and Bill’s friends. It was a two day event, and it went very well.

Laura and I, however, were not doing so well. During the final stages of our move up to Glendale, problems we had been having (primarily that I had been having with the relationship) plagued my thoughts, and after the food forest work party, my doubts came to a culmination.

This being a very personal issue and rather recent wound, I’m going to skip the details. Laura and I are no longer together, she and the girls staying with some people down by Ashland, and I remaining here in Glendale. I visited Texas for a couple of weeks, and when I returned to Oregon was like an entirely fresh start. The season was just beginning, and I now had one hundred percent of my energy to give to our projects of growing food and building a house from local materials.

Jerry lives on 80 acres, with quite a nice house, a barn, several ponds, meadows and lots of re-growth forest. The land used to be logging land, and was a family ranchette with horses most recently. Jerry spent three years property hunting, guided by a list of criteria he felt were important. This land had everything on his list, and he bought the place last spring (2009). Jerry is retired, and he mainly wants to create a welcoming environment capable of supporting people completely, which means growing food. Jerry and I share concern for the lack of food security in our society, and one of our primary objectives is to master the art of home economics, which does not mean decorating with drapes and baking pies and such. This term originally referred to the art of producing enough food, clothing, and firewood to survive through a winter. You get so much solar energy per season, and your job as a homesteader is to capture as much of it as you can in the form of plants, through gardening and foraging, and then convert it into a form that will keep, by canning and preserving.

Therefore whatever you can grow and/or gather from the land equals your annual budget. In the modern world, if you fail to keep within the budget, you simply create deficits, racking up debt and putting the problem on someone else’s shoulders. In the natural world, if you fail to keep within your budget, you starve. Convinced as many of us are that this idea of eternally escalating debt is utter nonsense, familiarizing ourselves with real survival strategies and real economics becomes quite important.

So we start with food. There are lots of different methods for providing ourselves with food, from farming to wild harvest, but what we seek is somewhere in between. As I get into details about our work here, I’ll be talking lots about alternative methods for food production and land management, in the context of Permaculture. The good news is that producing food does not have to be nearly as painstaking and labor-intensive as conventional agriculture and backyard gardening tend to be. If we align ourselves and our movements with existing patterns in nature, we can maximize production and minimize our own efforts.

So that’s the theme of what we’re working at. The goal is productive, self-managing land that not only supports human life with food and raw materials, but that restores the land instead of degrading it, and that nourishes the soul, offering a place of beauty, quiet, and refuge. Imagine living in a hillside hobbit house on the edge of the forest, with trails leading through patches of woods to meadows where fruit and nut trees abound, where hammocks and benches overlook ponds, fields of flowers, or the entire valley below. Every shift of the winds brings a new combination of fragrances from flowers and trees. Berry bushes, herbs, and garden greens are all around, as if growing wild. Irrigation creeks wind their way through tree guilds and vegetable patches, fed by ponds up in the hills, which are filled by winter rains. More food is produced than can possibly be eaten or harvested, and yet human management is minimal.

This beautiful vision is far from fantasy. With the right knowledge and planning such systems can be and have been designed. We are already well on our way to creating such a place here on Jerry’s land, which we are calling Gateway Forest Gardens. We have already put in the first installment of the food forest, which will produce bushels of food in just a few years. We have also started our vegetable garden, which is sheet mulched to minimize weeding and to do away with the need for yearly tilling or digging, and which is irrigated by the overflow from a spring-fed pond. It more or less takes care of itself, although I have had to spend some time out there at night with a flashlight, evicting slugs.

The land is ideal for the vision we have. There are already a few mature plum trees on the land, and wild foods like blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries abound. We have a long ways to go before we can supply even half of our own food needs from this property, but we are in a very good position to get there quickly, and my personal goal is to see if I can go a year eating only food from this land or that was grown in this valley, without exception. The key thing is local food production. If it’s not grown locally, you can’t count on it. Accepting this will require a major shift in our thinking, but the hungrier people get and the higher gas and food prices go, the more people will be attentive to local resources.

There’s lots to be done, and I’ve come to just the right place to get involved. I expect I’ll stay here in Glendale for several years, and perhaps even stay here. I’d certainly be willing to, but who knows what the future brings? I’m here now, and I intend to be here fully, putting my energy into this place as if it were my own. I am a caretaker of the Earth, a servant of the Almighty, and a student on the path of the Way. I have been given a wonderful gift, and I am thankful.

With a soft whitish whirl, my consciousness dives into the matrix, where I see not the screen before me, but the faces and thoughts of friends, images of the wildest things conceivable, and brilliant connections between billions of glowing dots, flashing flickering and fading into a single illuminated sphere when seen from far enough away. Navigating this network, I lay forth my thoughts.

We have a great deal of work to do, but it will be much fun. What a project! We are going to transform our environment into one that supports and sustains human life without depleting or and destroying the planet. In emotional swells of understanding and concern, ordinary citizens of this world, filled with the divine authority that shines compassionately through the eyes, are going to stand up to the perpetrators of war and pollution and environmental atrocities and simply say no. We can do this another way. Just watch us.

My participation in this permaculture design course has everything to do with the situation at hand, and like so many others I meet, I am training myself in the skills we really need to survive, and I don’t just mean growing food and storing enough water. (Though these are certainly essential.) There is a deeper level to this, at which one must cease to name and measure and simply observe. The range of things we are going to have to know how to do in order to rebuild our world in a sustainable way is enormous, and there is no way one can thoroughly study each science/skill. What is needed instead is the practice of simply sitting and being. Before we act, we must first feel things out, get to know what we are truly working with. When we understand the beings and systems that surround us, we don’t need to be specially trained for each thing… the whole of it will begin to emerge, and we will figure out what our role in it should be.

Not to say that training and study aren’t necessary. They’re just secondary to our inner work, tending the garden of our soul. If we don’t flourish and bloom there, we can never create a lasting bounty on the land around us. I can think of no better way to prepare myself for the projects I have in mind than to be studying with Tom Ward. He is a luminous being, keen of wit and casually comical, diversely learned and never reluctant to answer a question.

He’s familiarizing us with permaculture terminology, exemplifying the idea that permaculture is something that can apply to not just environmental systems, but every other aspect of our lives too. Stacking functions and looping energy are effective strategies in any economy, and the general way of thinking about things that permaculture promotes equips us to achieve incredible things in our relationships, our hobbies, and our means of making a living.

Withing my class I’m in a small group, with each group working on a design project together. My group is working with an animal sanctuary called Sanctuary One. We all went out there today to walk the property and observe the land. There are horses, goats, geese, ducks, and cats, all of whom have been rescued from abusive situations. I met the animals, and for the most part they were sociable and laid back. It’s sad though… so many refugees from such a destructive way of life. I consider myself among them, and I’m honored to get the chance to help permaculturize a place of refuge. Our vision for this converted farm includes the creation of water catchment ponds, irrigation canals, and swales, tree guilds, and an organic garden/farm, just to name a few. Our group is tasked with designing new systems (or ways that old structures can be retro-fitted) after we’ve spent some time observing, taking notes, and considering every factor. Others will implement the changes. But this project will give us an idea of what it is to be someone’s client as a permaculture designer, as well as practice at studying an actual site through the lens of permaculture.

Through this lens, we can see a far more beautiful world, full of mystery and majesty, abundant and peaceful, though never boring. When we learn to look at the world a little bit differently, everything changes. This change begun in me many years ago, but it’s taken me a while to clean out my guts and thoughts and get in position to actually do something other than complain about it. (Believe me, I could have had some fun just doing that.) But now I am poised, and once my training is complete, I will pounce on the piles of garbage all around me and convert them into something that serves our needs, leaving in their places patches of trees.

The purpose and focus of my presence in this cyber world has shifted. My site doesn’t currently reflect this, because it takes lots of time to edit and change the site, and if I got so caught up in doing that, I’d have far too little time to actually do the many things I’m trying to do. The basics of this shift (in what I’m all about and why I’m even bothering to have a website) will be revealed by the last few things I publish here on the good old World of McCool, but I’ve decided to create a new domain within this site, which will then become my primary place of work, so to speak, here in the matrix. This new domain will document all of the projects I am working on in the realm of permaculture, eco-communities, culture transformation. It will also contain tales from my latest adventures, unlike anything I’ve ever been into before. I’ve entered a more settled stage of life, working to create a sustainable homestead with my beloved and her two beautiful children. We are a family now, united by our desire to create a new reality around us. This new site will follow our journey into the realm of living off the land and in balance with nature, and will serve as a network for meeting other awakened individuals who likewise strive to make this a feasible reality.

It will be challenging, but we can do it. We sort of have to. The culture I came from is in no position to promise me I’ll have perpetual access food and water, and the food they offer is usually toxic anyway, so I figure it’s up to me to get these things taken care of. I am blessed in that I have many good allies and the best teachers I could ask for. We have been given some land on which to build our home (an Earthship/hobbit house of sorts, as the design stands) and we are very excited to get started. In a way, we’ve already gotten started, though we probably won’t start building until late spring.

It’s all really incredible, and I wish I could share in more detail some of the cool things I’ve been going through, but my work is elsewhere for now. I wish all my people well, and I’ll be posting some more things as time permits. Peace and prosperity! (For real, though!)

Hello everyone. Indeed, I am still alive, even though I’ve not been very active on this site for some time. I finally gave up on trying to keep up with documenting all things that have been going on, as the story is crazy complicated and I am busier than I have ever been.

Doing what? Attempting to homestead some raw land, creating a paradise oasis all around me. But in order to start this sort of long run work, I have to be on some land that I know I will be able to stay on, and can expect my children and their children to be able to be there as well, if they wish. For those of you who are not familiar with the Anastasia teachings, (which I describe in the New Human Culture section) there is a formula for creating around us thriving gardens and food forests, capable of supplying us with all we need to live, with far less labor involved on our part than people tend to think when I describe this vision to them. My mission, purpose, passion and aspiration in life is to apply this formula and create a genuine Space of Love, a living system of energy that is not only a home, but a work of art and a spiritual journey. This way of life, I believe, is the path to true sovereignty, and it is the most clever and most delightfully simple method to saving the planet from toxic destruction.

Overpopulation is one of the biggest threats to our planet, with most of our other problems stemming from our unsustainable numbers. What’s so genius about the Anastasia vision is that it turns that, one of our biggest problems, into an advantage. What’s the fastest way to restore the environment and eco-systems of this planet? Task close to seven billion people with the job of converting a single hectare into a beautiful garden that produces large quantities of food. (There is enough space for this - I did the math.) If these garden homesteads (called Spaces of Love or Kin’s Domains) were arranged in small hamlets, each community could locally produce everything needed to live, without the power grid, fossil fuels, hospitals, banks, police, and other such trappings of imperial civilization.

But all things in time. The old paradigm will continue to unwind itself, spinning faster and faster as it reaches the center of the spool, nearing the end. But its hold on the thoughts of humankind is slipping, and people all over are waking up, realizing that our salvation, health, and happiness are not in the hands of any outside authority, but in our own hands. Because of this, we will see more Spaces of Love emerging all over the planet. This is a good thing.

So yeah, that’s the vision. As for what I’m actually doing day to day to get there, that’s a bigger, crazier story. Some of you will remember that I moved up to Oregon to join a community of people attempting to create a hamlet of Kin’s Domains, but what actually happened with that project I’ve not discussed. At first it was because I was too busy to keep up with it in writing, but then the story got so crazy that I started to wonder whether or not it would be a good idea to publish the things I was witnessing and taking part in. I’ve taken flak before from people who dislike being included in my website, and I am 100% sure that if I published the whole story of the first North American Anastasia community - Shambhala Shasta lots of people would get super pissed and everyone else involved would be made very uncomfortable. Considering the fact that this story extends far beyond the eco-community and Anastasia scene, involving people who wield power, money and fame, discretion must guide my moves.

So what I can tell you guys is that it’s been a wild ride, which has taught me much. Pieces of this story will come out as I try to draw into a larger conclusion about how to best go about getting onto a Space of Love. I am still a part of the Shambhala community, but the project of developing the land we already own is sort of on hiatus, with major financial difficulties holding us back, and with most of our original settlers wanting their money back. This is most unfortunate, but not unexpected. For those of you who might be acquainted with this world, the Colorado Kin’s Domain project was granted millions of dollars to start their community, but they never received any money. Powerful forces are at work attempting to waylay this Earth-changing vision, but they can only slow things down.

One way or another, we will return to the land. Laura and I have already found another piece of land that would be perfect for building a Kin’s Domain, and we are doing all we can to get on that space and get started. This is a story unto itself, as is my current relationship with Laura. In short, we met through Shambhala, and quite naturally fell in love and partnered up. We have crossed quite a few things off the list of what it will take to build a Space of Love, and we are totally committed to making this happen. We are just trying to be patient with all we must endure to get there. But we will overcome, and we will be among the first families of the Vedruss people to once again walk this planet, which will rapidly return to its pristine state as the Vedruss culture awakens.

So more on all this as I have time. Now that I’m a family man, my time is even at a higher premium, and I currently care for a ten acre parcel of land with woods and gardens and horses, which has me outside a lot. How it seems summer does fly! The plums came in, the peaches and the corn all have come in, and the strawberries and tomatoes and blackberries and apples keep on producing. The grapes will be in soon enough, and apples will be getting bigger and sweeter. It’s good to be back on a space of the Earth that abounds with fruits to eat. May we all endeavor to so surround our lives with living gifts from the Creator.

I got a ride back from Portland last night from a dude named Gary, who had enough tales of adventure and travel and spiritual growth to fill our entire 5 hour ride. Originally from Germany, Gary came here when he was a young man, on a whim, with the aim to stay a while and see what was what. He arrived in LA, but moved all around the country, staying in places for a month, three months, a year, whatever. He got involved with this thing called the Longest Walk, an eclectic bunch of journeyers treking across the US on foot. Japanese Buddhist monks, Native Americans, hippies, and international explorers all hiking along, twenty miles a day, San Francisco to New York, San Fran to New Orleans, to Chicago… it sounded fascinating. Gary had all sorts of stories of things that he experienced on these six month long hikes. Once he fasted for three days without water and food and had a vision of another realm, at which point he was guided out of his fast and been cleansed with a flush of saltwater. It reminded me of the nine day fast I had done back when I first came back out here from Texas. There’s nothing like a good gut cleanse! But three and half days without water, while walking twenty miles a day? Hard to fathom.

Now, back from another trip to visit family, I settle back into life out here at Shambhala. The story is getting so rich that I can’t even begin to think about how I’ll present it, but I’m socking away every detail, and it’s a trip just to think back on it all. And it’s only getting more interesting now. Much to be announced, whenever I get around to that. I know it’s been an incredibly long time since I posted anything new up here, but that’s just been because it’s all coming at once, and I’m really in the zone riding on this cresting wave. You always tell yourself, when you’re out there beyond the break, waiting for a good wave to ride, that you’re getting tired and you’ll just ride the next one you catch all the way in and call it a day. But then… right as you get the roll tumbling along behind you and you zip across the surface of the ocean, you get so excited by the feeling that you immediately begin swimming back out as soon as you hit the water again.

Anyway, I’m back to my routine here, taking care of our gardens and making considerations for winter. It’s an ongoing struggle to fund the various things that need to happen, so I’m just doing what I always do - scrimp along and pick up whatever work can be found. But I’m certainly not sacrificing anything as far as my personal standard of living. All of funding currently goes towards eating, which is more costly than it used to be back in the days when I was careless with my health. My living foods diet involves lots of nuts and avocados and frequent restockings of vegetables and fruits. It will be a lot easier to live this way once I am surrounded by the garden domain of my own design, producing all that I love in an ever turning cycle of seasons. For now, it’s the coop, and it’s expensive. But a man who wishes for his body to be a temple must have certain standards about what he allows in.

My time in Louisville was grand. It was wonderful to see everyone, and Callie, my sister’s baby, was quite the attraction. I got to see relatives I haven’t seen in some time, and we had one big fancy table full of great food after another. We played cornhole, a bean bag (or corn bag) tossing game in the backyard, and we took walks down by the spring in the backyard. We also went to the Kentucky State Fair, where we saw the usual fair stuff, with some fun ag stuff like hay and prize produce, dairy vendors and pigs and sheep and cows and the whole durn farm. We skipped the rides, and the concessions, but we saw some amazing acrobats doing a little show, and a dog jumping show that most entiertaining.

Life is moving along in a most exciting series of events. I’ll tell all about it sometime. But for now, I hope everyone is ready for a wild ride, because things are about to get interesting all over this country! Until then…
